Surgery After Care

Day Surgery Aftercare:

  • Have someone available to drive you home and refrain from driving for at least 24-48 hours.
  • When you feel hungry, start with clear fluids and progress to a light meal. Avoid fatty foods for at least 24 hrs.
  • Apply ice to the back of your knee and/or carefully over your surgical bandage. This will help decrease swelling and pain.
  • Start taking your pain medication as soon as you start feeling any discomfort. DO NOT WAIT until you are in severe pain. You always want to stay ahead of the pain. Otherwise, you will have difficulty controlling your pain level.
  • Begin the antibiotic the evening of surgery day.
  • Keep your dressing clean, dry and intact until you are seen for your first follow-up visit.
  • Remember to wear your boot or shoe. You may only take it off while you are resting, in bed or showering.
  • Follow your instructions regarding whether you can walk or not after your procedure. This is something that is discussed prior to your surgery, but if there is ever any doubt, remain non-weightbearing.
  • If there is any visible bleeding through your bandages during the first 24 hrs, reinforce the dressing lightly. If it continues, call the office.
  • If any concerns are to arise, please do not hesitate to call any time 24 hrs a day.
